First legislative elections since end of military rule
On this day, 12th of April in 1999, Nigeria held her first legislative elections following the inception of civil rule.
However, the poll was marked by delays, allegations of ballot-snatching, political thuggery among others. The party of President Olusegun Obasanjo, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wins parliamentary majority.
Over 100 killed in fresh attacks on Plateau communities
On this day, April 12 in 2022, more than 100 people were killed by gunmen in fresh attacks on Plateau communities in Kanam and Wase Local Government Areas.
The attacks, which happened on Sunday, were carried out in Kukawa, Gyambawu, Dungur, Kyaram, Yelwa, Dadda, Wanka, Shuwaka, Gwammadaji, and Dadin Kowa communities of the state.
The two local governments share boundaries but are not in the same senatorial districts.
Ishaku Takwa, the media officer of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), a military task force maintaining peace in Plateau State and environs, confirmed the attacks to journalists on Sunday in Jos.
