From Juliana Olayode to Tobi Makinde: Is there’s a pattern around Funke Akindele & her protégés
SHARE

Popular Nigerian movie actress and Nollywood heavyweight filmmaker Funke Akindele is a force to reckon with in Nollywood. Her journey has been nothing short of spectacular. It’s been quite the trip, from a young lady who played the role of Bisi in the UNFPA-sponsored sitcom I Need To Know, to the box office powerhouse who now wears many hats with effortless dominance.

The filmmaker, actress, director, cum producer has not only built an enviable career for herself, she has also become a launchpad for emerging talents, raising a new generation of actors who found visibility and relevance through her projects, especially the cultural phenomenon, Jenifa’s Diary.

Names like Juliana Olayode, who rose to fame as Toyo Baby, and Tobi Makinde, widely loved for his role as Timini, are just a few of the talents whose careers blossomed under her influence. For many, a co-sign from Funke Akindele is more than an opportunity, it is a defining moment.

However, beyond the glitz of mentorship and success stories, a different conversation has quietly persisted in the background. This conversation resurfaces every time a protégé appears to step away or grow independently.

With recent speculation surrounding Tobi Makinde’s relationship with his longtime mentor, fans have once again begun to draw comparisons, revisiting past narratives and asking a lingering question:

Is there truly a pattern when it comes to Funke Akindele and her protégés or is this simply the nature of growth in Nollywood?

The “Toyo Baby” Chapter – Rise, Fallout, and Reconciliation

Juliana Olayode “Toyo-baby” & Funke Akindele

For many fans, the conversation around Funke Akindele and her protégés did not begin today. It dates back to the widely discussed case of Juliana Olayode, fondly known as Toyo Baby.

Juliana shot into the spotlight in 2015, when she starred as Toyosi in Jenifa’s Diary, the hit comedy series created by Funke Akindele. The show, which premiered on April 15, 2015, quickly became a cultural phenomenon, and her character grew into a fan favourite, playing a key role in its early success.

However, at the peak of her fame, her sudden exit from the series around 2017 sparked widespread speculation. At the time, neither Juliana nor Funke publicly addressed the situation, leaving fans to fill in the gaps with assumptions of a fallout.

It wasn’t until late 2023 that Juliana finally broke her silence, revealing that the situation was more complex than rumours suggested. According to her, the breakdown in their relationship was influenced by inexperience, poor management decisions, and actions taken without her knowledge, which created tension between both parties.

In that same period, she publicly apologised, describing her past actions as “childish mistakes,” and took responsibility for her role in the misunderstanding. Her apology was warmly received by Funke, marking the beginning of a reconciliation.

By December 2023, the reunion had moved beyond words to action, as both actresses were seen working together again on projects, including A Tribe Called Judah.

More recently, in a March 29, 2026 interview, Juliana opened up about the reconciliation, emphasizing that her desire was never about career benefits, but about restoring a personal relationship she deeply valued.

This entire arc from rapid rise to sudden exit, silence, and eventual reconciliation has since become a reference point in Nollywood conversations.

And now, with fresh speculation surrounding newer protégés like Tobi Makinde, many fans can’t help but look back at the “Toyo Baby chapter” and wonder: Was it an isolated situation or the beginning of a pattern?

Tobi Makinde – Between Loyalty, Growth and Public Perception

Funke Akindele & Tobi Makinde

If Juliana Olayode’s story shows a clear fallout and later reconciliation, then Tobi Makinde’s situation is very different. His case is built more on perception than reality.

Tobi Makinde, known for playing Timini in Jenifa’s Diary, has always been seen as one of Funke Akindele’s closest protégés. Their working relationship went beyond acting. He worked behind the scenes as a production manager and creative partner, and even co-directed Battle on Buka Street in 2022 with her.

Because of this, many people viewed their bond as not just professional, but one that helped shape his career.

Then, between late 2025 and early 2026, people began to talk. There was no major incident, but small things caught attention. They were not seen together as often. He was missing from promoting some of her projects. She was not present at his wedding. A clip from a movie premiere event where they did not interact also went viral.

On their own, these moments were not unusual. But together, they created a story online that something was wrong.

Tobi addressed these rumours in an interview published on April 10, 2026, with BBC News Pidgin. He made it clear that there was no issue.

According to him, nothing happened between him and Funke Akindele, and he is not aware of any fallout. He explained that social media often creates its own stories and then fits people into them, whether they are true or not.

Speaking on her absence at his wedding, he said it was simply because she was busy with film promotions. He described her as a very busy person and made it clear that it was not personal.

More importantly, he gave another way to look at the situation. He explained that as people grow and move into new phases in their careers, it can sometimes look like there is distance, even when there is none.

This matches what is happening in his career now. Tobi Makinde says he is focusing more on his own projects and building himself as an independent filmmaker, while still open to working with Funke Akindele again.

His story adds something important to this conversation. There is no confirmed fallout, and he has clearly denied any problem. Yet, people still believe there might be one.

Nonetheless, it shows how quickly people assume conflict when they no longer see the same level of closeness in public. In the end, it raises a bigger question: are these really repeated fallouts, or are fans simply mistaking growth and independence for distance?

Other Names Fans Keep Bringing Up

Beyond Juliana Olayode and Tobi Makinde, fans often bring up other familiar faces from Jenifa’s Diary. The show, which premiered on April 15, 2015, has introduced many actors who later became well known in Nollywood.

Names like Lota Chukwu, Falz, Omotunde Adebowale-David aka Adaku or Lolo, and Paschaline Alex Okoli are often mentioned in these conversations. Not because of any confirmed issues, but simply because they all came from the same creative space built by Funke Akindele.

In reality, there are no verified reports of any fallout involving these actors. What people are seeing instead is a natural shift in careers.

Some of them stayed closely connected to the Jenifa’s Diary franchise for a long time. Others moved on to build their own paths in Nollywood, taking on different roles and projects. A few just became less visible in Funke Akindele’s productions as time went on.

This mix of staying, leaving, and growing in different directions has led to a lot of online talk. Fans often watch closely and try to figure out who is still part of the circle and who is not.

But unlike the situation with Toyo Baby, these cases are not based on any confirmed disagreement. They are mostly assumptions built from what people see or do not see on screen and on social media.

Is There Really a Pattern? — Social Media vs Reality

Funke Akindele

At the center of the conversation is a question that keeps coming up: is there really a pattern around Funke Akindele and her protégés, or are people simply reading too much into what they see online?

Many fans believe there is a cycle. An actor rises under her platform, gains attention, and begins to grow. With time, that actor starts exploring new opportunities and building independence. As this happens, they are seen together less often, and almost immediately, talk of a fallout begins.

From Juliana Olayode to Tobi Makinde, this sequence has started to feel familiar to many people. It is easy to see why some now call it a pattern.

But when you look closely at what can actually be confirmed, the story becomes more balanced.
Juliana Olayode’s case is still the only clear example of a real fallout. Even then, it did not end there. There was a public reconciliation, showing that the situation was not permanent.

Tobi Makinde’s situation is different. He has openly said there is no issue between him and Funke Akindele. According to him, the story of a rift is something created by social media, not real life.

For the other names people often mention, there is no verified proof of any conflict. What exists instead are career changes, new priorities, and the kind of distance that naturally comes with growth in a fast-moving industry.

This is where the difference becomes clear. Online, many people believe mentorships must end badly, that reduced public visibility means there is tension, and that silence is proof of a problem. But in reality, things are often simpler. Careers evolve. Public figures do not share everything. And not every change in a working relationship is personal.

In many ways, what people are calling a pattern may just reflect how the entertainment industry works, especially in Nollywood. Mentorship can be strong and impactful, but it does not always stay the same forever.

As protégés grow and step into their own space, the closeness may change. But that change does not automatically mean there is conflict.

So the question remains, not because there is no answer, but because it depends on perspective. Are people looking at what is confirmed, or are they following the story being built around it?

Conclusion

In the end, what many see as a pattern around Funke Akindele and her protégés may be less about repeated fallouts and more about the optics of growth.

From Juliana Olayode’s very public journey to Tobi Makinde’s firmly denied “rift,” the reality remains uneven—one confirmed case, several assumptions, and a lot of audience interpretation.

Perhaps, in an industry like Nollywood, where mentorship births stardom, distance is inevitable and not every distance tells a story of conflict.
