After many years of tension, silence, and a very public fallout, super star singers Tiwa Savage and Seyi Shay have finally shared a moment many thought would never come.

At the Tiwa Savage Music Foundation graduation in Lagos on April 26, 2026, both artists were seen exchanging a warm embrace. This simple hug signalled the end of one of Nigerian pop’s most talked-about rivalries.

What Were the Issues? (2019–2021)

The rift between Tiwa Savage and Seyi Shay did not begin in public. For many years, it was thought to be rivalry among other underlying issues in the industry until it finally spilled into the open.

By 2019, those underlying issues had started to take form in ways the public could not ignore. During the viral Fvck You Challenge started by Kizz Daniel, Seyi Shay released a freestyle that quickly drew attention, due to what many believed her version implied.

Lines like “You know I’m not savage, I pay my bills” were widely interpreted as a shade. Listeners connected the phrasing to Tiwa Savage almost immediately, reading it as a subtle but deliberate jab. Another line referencing a debtor list tied to a popular Lagos nightclub added more fuel, with fans again drawing connections and building a narrative of quiet rivalry.

At the same time, questions around professional credit began to resurface. Seyi Shay had co-written “Lova Lova” with Ceeza Milli, a track later released by Tiwa Savage. Her claim that she was not properly credited added another layer to the growing tension. Whether it was an intentional decision or not, it simply poured fuel on the perception that their issues were not just personal, but professional.

Then came the peak moment that made netizens realise there was indeed a serious beef going on between the singers. Because if 2019 made the tension visible, 2021 made it undeniable.

In June of that year, both artists crossed paths at a salon in Lekki. According to Seyi Shay, she approached Tiwa Savage, trying to initiate a greeting. What followed instead was a confrontation that would define their relationship in the public eye.

The viral video that captured the moment showed a heated exchange, with Tiwa Savage visibly upset and unrestrained in expressing it. It was not a polite disagreement or a controlled conversation. It was emotional, direct, and deeply personal, leading fans to suggest it must have been caused by years of pent-up and unresolved feelings.

Pre-Reconciliation (2025)

Just when it seemed the tension between Tiwa Savage and Seyi Shay had settled into silence, 2025 brought a different perspective.

In October of that year, Seyi Shay without mincing words, spoke for the first time about what may have gone wrong between her and Tiwa. Speaking on the OffAir Show, she traced the roots of the fallout to a personal issue and not industry rivalry that many thought.

She revealed that a former personal assistant had reached out to her years later while she was in London. During their meeting, the woman allegedly broke down and confessed to being in a secret relationship with Tunji Balogun, Tiwa Savage’s ex-husband, at the time she was working with Seyi Shay.

According to Seyi Shay, the confession was both shocking and painful. Not just because of the betrayal, but because it may have been the missing piece behind everything that followed. If Tiwa Savage believed she knew about the relationship, it could explain the anger that played out over the years.

For the first time, the situation began to look less like a rivalry and more like a misunderstanding that was never addressed.

Around the same period, Tiwa Savage also shared her side. Speaking on the same show, she addressed long-standing claims that she had tried to block opportunities for other female artists, including Seyi Shay.

She dismissed the claims, questioning where they came from and insisting she had never deliberately stood in anyone’s way. She pointed to a past endorsement deal she lost while pregnant. Using it as proof that the narrative did not hold, Tiwa added that Seyi Shay later secured the endorsement.

On the salon incident, Tiwa made it clear her reaction came from how she felt at the time. She was not going to pretend things were fine when they were not.

By this point, the tone of the conversation had changed. There were no direct reconciliations yet, but it was obvious things had taken a positive turn.

2026: The Embrace That Changed the Narrative

Fast forward to April 26, 2026, Singers Tiwa Savage and Seyi Shay shared a warm embrace at the Tiwa Savage Music Foundation graduation held in Lagos.

The event which was organised in partnership with Berklee College of Music took place on Sunday at the National Theatre and marked the Berklee in Nigeria: Class of 2026 graduation.

It was a full house. About 120 emerging artists performed at the free concert, while eighteen students received full three-year undergraduate scholarships to study in Boston. Singer Teni also took the stage during the ceremony.

But beyond the music and celebration, it was the warm embrace Tiwa and Seyi shared that took the spotlight.

A video that quickly circulated online showed both artists smiling and exchanging a tight, friendly hug. They spoke to each other for a few minutes, wide smiles still plastered on their faces to the joy of fans, given everything that had happened before.

After years of tension, the moment did not need explanation. It spoke for itself.
