The 2026 FIFA World Cup promises to bring together an unprecedented blend of established legends, elite performers and emerging stars as 48 nations compete across Canada, the United States and Mexico.

With the tournament scheduled to commence on June 11, 2026, attention is already turning to the players expected to shape the competition and provide some of its defining moments.

Veteran icons chasing history

Among the most recognisable names heading to the tournament is Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, who is expected to become the first footballer to feature at six FIFA World Cups.

At 41, the Portugal captain remains his country’s leading figure and continues his pursuit of the one major title that has eluded him throughout an illustrious career.

Another player attracting global attention is Lionel Messi of Argentina, whose influence on the game has remained significant despite entering the latter stages of his playing career.

Having guided Argentina to World Cup success in 2022, Messi is widely expected to make what could be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.

The prospect of seeing both Ronaldo and Messi at another World Cup has added further excitement to a tournament already packed with elite talent.

Leading stars expected to dominate

France forward Kylian Mbappé enters the competition as one of the foremost candidates for individual honours and is expected to play a central role in his country’s title ambitions.

Widely regarded as one of football’s most dangerous attackers, Mbappé combines pace, finishing ability and experience at the highest level.

Norway striker Erling Haaland is also expected to command significant attention as he prepares for his first World Cup appearance.

Known for his remarkable goalscoring record, Haaland will carry the hopes of a Norwegian side returning to football’s premier international competition.

Brazil winger Vinícius Júnior is another player expected to feature prominently after establishing himself among the world’s leading attacking talents.

His creativity, speed and technical ability have made him a key figure for Brazil as the South American giants seek another World Cup triumph.

Egypt captain Mohamed Salah remains one of Africa’s most influential footballers and will arrive at the tournament carrying the expectations of millions of supporters across the continent and beyond.

Egypt’s qualification ensures that one of African football’s most celebrated figures will once again compete on a global stage.

Young talents ready for the spotlight

The tournament is also expected to showcase the next generation of football stars.

Spain’s Lamine Yamal has already earned widespread acclaim despite his young age and is viewed by many observers as one of the game’s most exciting prospects.

Germany midfielder Jamal Musiala is another player expected to command attention after emerging as one of his country’s most dynamic performers.

A successful campaign for Germany could further enhance Musiala’s growing international reputation.

England winger Bukayo Saka will also enter the tournament as one of his nation’s most trusted attacking players.

His performances in major competitions have demonstrated an ability to influence matches under pressure.

Midfield leaders and key performers

England’s hopes will also rest heavily on Jude Bellingham, whose energetic style and all-round contributions have established him among the game’s leading midfielders.

Alongside him, Declan Rice is expected to play a pivotal role through his leadership, consistency and control in midfield.

England captain Harry Kane remains one of international football’s most reliable goalscorers and will once again spearhead his country’s attack.

For Uruguay, Federico Valverde is expected to remain central to the team’s energetic and combative approach.

Argentina forward Julián Álvarez is also likely to assume greater responsibility as the reigning champions gradually prepare for a future beyond Messi.

Spain midfielder Rodri and France attacker Ousmane Dembélé complete a group of influential performers expected to play decisive roles for their respective nations.

A changing era in world football

The 2026 World Cup is widely viewed as a tournament that could symbolise a transition between generations.

While legendary figures such as Ronaldo and Messi prepare for what may be their final appearances at the competition, younger stars including Mbappé, Haaland, Yamal and Musiala are positioning themselves to become the new faces of global football.

Other notable names expected to feature include South Korea captain Son Heung-min and a host of players representing traditional football powers such as Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany and Spain.

As the countdown continues, the tournament appears set to provide a stage where football’s established icons and emerging talents will compete side by side in pursuit of the sport’s most coveted prize.
