Veteran Nollywood actor, academic and theatre icon, Kola Oyewo, has passed away at the age of 80, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned more than six decades.
The sad news was confirmed by fellow actor Kunle Afod in an emotional tribute shared on his official Instagram page. Mourning the loss, Afod described Oyewo as a true legend whose immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry would remain unforgettable.
“Tonight, we lost a true legend. Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, sir. Your work lives on. It’s a wrap,” Afod wrote.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his professional acting career in 1964 after joining the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, where he made his debut in Orogun Adedigba. He later spent years working alongside renowned playwright and scholar, the late Ola Rotimi, at the University of Ife theatre.
Oyewo became widely celebrated for portraying Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s classic drama, The Gods Are Not to Blame.
Beyond the stage and screen, the late actor distinguished himself in academia, earning degrees from Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Ibadan. He lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University and Elizade University, left behind a lasting legacy in both performing arts and education.
