The music industry moves fast. Artists are often expected to keep releasing songs, performing at shows, and staying active on social media to remain relevant. But sometimes, life gets in the way. Health issues, grief, family responsibilities, business interests, burnout, and personal growth can force even the biggest stars to step away from the spotlight.

Over the years, several Nigerian artists have taken breaks from music for different reasons. Some needed time to heal. Some wanted to focus on family or business. Others stepped away to rediscover themselves or pursue a different path entirely.

From Ycee’s journey of self-discovery to Mr Eazi’s year-long break after losing his mother and Rema’s decision to pause touring because of exhaustion, here are 15 Nigerian artists who took a break from music and the reasons behind their decisions.

1. Davido

Davido

In May 2026, Davido announced a two-month break from music to focus on politics.

The Afrobeats star paused recording and performing activities to work on the re-election campaign of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, ahead of the August 2026 governorship election.

Davido said he believed his uncle was doing a good job and wanted to contribute to the campaign effort. He also reminded fans that his extensive catalogue of hit songs would keep him present even while away from the studio.

2. Kizz Daniel

Kizz Daniel

In July 2025, Kizz Daniel revealed that he was stepping away from recording music to spend more time with his family.

The singer explained that his family had complained that he spent too much time in the studio and not enough time with them. His decision also came after a difficult period marked by personal losses within his family.

Although he paused recording, Kizz Daniel reassured fans that he still had hundreds of unreleased songs in his catalogue.

3. Ycee

Ycee

Ycee’s break from music followed his exit from Tinny Entertainment and a period of reduced visibility in the industry.

For years, fans wondered what had happened to the rapper. In June 2026, he explained that he had been on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth before deciding to return to music.

4. Wizkid

Wizkid

Wizkid stepped back from the spotlight following the death of his mother, Jane Dolapo Balogun, in August 2023.

After her burial in October 2023, the singer largely stayed away from public attention as he processed the loss. The period eventually inspired a new creative direction.

In November 2024, he returned with Morayo, an album named after his late mother and dedicated to her memory.

5. Rema

Rema

In November 2023, Rema surprised fans by cancelling all his December concert performances.

At the time, the singer explained that years of nonstop touring had affected his health and that he needed time to recover.

The break came while Rema was enjoying global success with Calm Down, one of the biggest Afrobeats songs in the world.

6. Omah Lay

Omah Lay

Over the years, Omah Lay has spoken openly about his struggles with depression and mental health.

The singer is known for occasionally withdrawing from social media and public life to focus on his emotional well-being and creative process.

Some of these periods of isolation influenced projects such as Boy Alone, which explored loneliness, heartbreak, and personal struggles.

7. Tems

Tems

In June 2022, Tems postponed several performances after being diagnosed with reflux laryngitis, a condition affecting her vocal cords.

Following medical advice, she took time off to rest and recover rather than risk permanent damage to her voice.

She later returned to the stage and continued her rise as one of Africa’s biggest global music stars.

8. Teni

Teni

Teni has taken breaks at different points in her career to focus on her health and personal well-being.

One of those breaks came after she battled a serious throat infection. She also stepped away from social media in May 2026, following a family loss, choosing to grieve privately.

Teni’s elder sister, Niniola lost her husband and longtime manager, Michael Ndika, on May 19, 2026. Following his passing at age 44, he was officially laid to rest on Friday, June 5, 2026.

After returning to social media, Teni thanked fans for their support and resumed releasing music.

9. Bad Boy Timz

Bad Boy Timz

Bad Boy Timz’s career slowed significantly after a public dispute with his former label, Anonymous Music, in 2021.

The disagreement led to legal battles that affected his momentum and kept attention away from his music.

After reaching a settlement in 2022, he regained control of his career and later released his debut album, No Bad Boy, No Party, in 2023.

10. Mr Eazi

Mr Eazi

After releasing his debut album The Evil Genius in October 2023, Mr Eazi took an extended break from music.

The singer later revealed that he stepped away following the death of his mother. He used the period to grieve, rest, and focus on his growing business interests across Africa.

During the break, he continued building ventures through emPawa Africa and other investments while staying away from the pressures of recording and touring.

11. Seyi Vibez

Seyi Vibez

After releasing multiple projects between 2022 and 2023, Seyi Vibez significantly reduced his solo output in 2024.

The slowdown coincided with his departure from Dapper Music and the launch of his independent imprint, NSNV INC. He returned in February 2025 with the EP Children of Africa.

12. Wande Coal

Wande Coal

Wande Coal has become known for taking long breaks between major projects. After releasing Mushin 2 Mo’Hits in 2009, he waited until 2015 to release his second album, Wanted.

Throughout his career, he has preferred to take his time between projects rather than follow the industry’s fast-paced release schedule.

13. Lynxxx

Lynxxx

In August 2015, Lynxxx experienced a spiritual awakening that changed the direction of his life.

The rapper stepped away from the spotlight for several years, focusing on his faith and personal growth. When he eventually returned, he explained that he had redefined his understanding of success and purpose.

14. Chidinma

Chidinma

After more than a decade as a successful pop star, Chidinma announced in May 2021 that she was leaving secular music.

The singer said she had found a deeper sense of purpose through her faith and decided to dedicate her music to gospel ministry. She released her first gospel single, Jehovah Overdo, shortly after the announcement.

15. Seyi Shay

Seyi Shay

Following the release of her album Big Girl in December 2021, Seyi Shay stepped away from the spotlight.

The break came after the death of music icon Sound Sultan, who played an important role in her career. During the same period, she also welcomed her first child and focused on motherhood. She eventually returned to public life and music after several years away.

Conclusion

The stories of these artists show that taking a break from music is not always a sign of decline. While their reasons differed, they all made the same decision: to step away from the spotlight when they felt it was necessary.

In today’s music industry, where artists face constant pressure to stay visible, these breaks serve as a reminder that success is not only about staying active. Sometimes, knowing when to pause can be just as important as knowing when to perform.
