When Cynthia Anijekwu appeared in an emotional video asking Nigerians to help save her life, many people had never heard her name. But within days, her story had spread across social media, prompting an outpouring of donations led by actress Destiny Etiko.

The fundraising effort has now exceeded Cynthia’s initial target, with Destiny announcing that more than ₦21 million has been raised for the actress’ treatment. Behind the donations, however, is the story of a Nollywood actress fighting cancer for the second time while hoping for another chance at life.

Who is Cynthia Anijekwu?

Cynthia Anijekwu

Many Nigerians know her today because of her health appeal, but Cynthia Anijekwu, also known as Nkachukwu Anijekwu, has been building her career in Nollywood for years.

She has appeared in several English and Igbo-language productions, gradually establishing herself as one of the industry’s rising actresses. Although she is not among Nollywood’s biggest stars, she has remained active in the industry and built relationships with colleagues, including Destiny Etiko, whose support has now brought her story to national attention.

Her First Battle With Cancer

Cynthia revealed that she was first diagnosed with cancer in 2023. According to the actress, she underwent surgery followed by chemotherapy, and for a while, the treatment appeared to be successful. However, the relief did not last.

Speaking in the emotional video, she explained that the cancer later returned. In her words:

“I had cancer in 2023. I did my surgery and took chemotherapy, but later it came back again.”

When The Disease Became More Serious

The actress said recent medical examinations brought even more difficult news. Doctors informed her that the cancer had spread to her bones, making her condition more complicated and requiring more aggressive treatment.

She disclosed that she has been advised to undergo radiation therapy as well as another surgery. She also revealed that doctors may have to remove her second breast as part of her treatment. The cost has placed a heavy burden on her family, with Cynthia saying she now spends more than ₦600,000 every month on medical care. She continued:

“I’ve been in and out of the hospital. The doctor recently told me it has reached my bones, and the treatment is now much more expensive.”

She also revealed that both breasts have been affected and that even her hands had become swollen as the disease progressed.

Unable to continue paying for treatment alone, Cynthia made an emotional appeal to Nigerians. Unsuccessfully fighting back tears, she pleaded with members of the public not to ignore her situation. She added:

“I need to live. I need to survive. I’m asking Nigerians to please help me.”

“Your one naira, your two naira can add up to something reasonable for me to get the proper treatment for this cancer. I’m begging you, please help me.”

The heartfelt appeal quickly gained attention across social media, with many Nigerians expressing sympathy and offering financial support.

Destiny Etiko’s Appeal Changed Everything

Among those who responded was actress Destiny Etiko, who reposted Cynthia’s video and urged Nigerians to help save the life of their colleague.

The appeal quickly gathered momentum. Within a short period, Destiny announced that about ₦7 million had already been donated. Although grateful, Destiny further explained that Cynthia still needed more support to meet her ₦20 million treatment target. The fundraising campaign continued to grow as more people donated and shared her story.

Donations Climb To ₦21 Million

On July 9, 2026, Destiny Etiko returned with encouraging news. Sharing a screenshot of the donations received, the actress revealed that Nigerians had contributed more than the amount Cynthia initially requested. She wrote:

“Cynthia has gotten above what she asked us for.
She now has 21M million.
Omo am shut of words.
God bless y’all so much.
Thanks for saving a life.”

The update sparked another wave of celebration online, with many praising Nigerians for coming together to support the actress during one of the most difficult periods of her life.

Conclusion

Cynthia Anijekwu’s story is about more than illness. It is also a reminder of how quickly lives can change and how collective kindness can make a difference.

While the ₦21 million raised offers hope and eases part of the financial burden, her journey is far from over. She still faces further treatment, including radiation therapy and surgery.

For many Nigerians, however, the overwhelming response to her appeal has shown that even in difficult times, compassion can give someone another chance to keep fighting.
