On July 19, 2006, at least 24 people died after a four-storey block of flats collapsed overnight.
It was gathered that the building, which was less than three years old, housed 36 apartments and an estimated 180 residents, including several businesses operating on the ground floor.
Rescue workers recovered bodies from the rubble through the morning as families waited at the scene for news of missing relatives.
According to Red Cross officials at the site, poor construction was discovered to be the cause of the accident.
The incident is one of several building collapses recorded in Lagos in recent years and has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of building codes.
Officials said investigations would continue to determine who was responsible for the construction and whether approvals were properly obtained.
Residents in the area described hearing a loud crash in the early hours before the structure came down completely.
