On August 18, 2014, the Lagos State Police Command enforced ban on public smoking.

The command disclosed that it had partnered with British American Tobacco, BAT, to organise a one-day sensitisation programme for senior police officers across the state.

A senior police official, while speaking at the event, revealed that the programme was aimed at equipping officers with the right knowledge on how to enforce the ban and handle offenders in line with the law.

Participants at the sensitisation were drawn from various divisions and formations across the state. Facilitators from British American Tobacco (BAT) took officers through the provisions of the anti-smoking law, areas covered by the ban, and acceptable enforcement procedures.

The Command stressed that enforcement would begin immediately and urged members of the public to comply in order to avoid arrest and prosecution.

Officials noted that the collaboration with BAT was part of broader efforts to create awareness and ensure a smooth rollout of the policy without harassment of citizens.

The ban on public smoking is expected to cover parks, bus stops, government buildings, and other public places in the state.
