Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling stage-four cancer.

The veteran Yoruba actor reportedly died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after his health deteriorated following a prolonged battle with the illness.

His death was announced by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an emotional Instagram Live session on Sunday. The announcement came just days after the actor’s family publicly appealed for urgent medical assistance as his condition became increasingly critical.

Ogogo’s daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, had earlier disclosed that their father was battling stage-four cancer and needed specialist medical attention. The family’s appeal sparked an outpouring of concern from fans, colleagues and well-wishers across Nigeria.

The actor’s death also comes days after a false report of his passing circulated on social media.

On August 18, reports claiming that Ogogo had died spread widely online. His daughter, Lima, subsequently dismissed the reports as false and urged members of the public to stop circulating unverified information about her father’s condition.

However, five days later, the family confirmed the tragic news, with Kira announcing that the veteran actor had passed away.

Born Taiwo Hassan, Ogogo became one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba Nollywood, building a career that spanned several decades. He was widely respected for his distinctive acting style and memorable performances in Yoruba-language films.

Beyond his work in traditional Yoruba cinema, Ogogo also featured in major contemporary Nigerian productions, including Aníkúlápó, further introducing his talent to a broader audience.

His career earned him a strong following among Nigerian film lovers, particularly audiences who grew up watching Yoruba movies.

The news of his death has sent mourners across the Nigerian entertainment industry into grief, with tributes expected from actors, filmmakers, colleagues and fans who followed his career over the years.
