The ongoing protest by Lagos State pensioners at the government house in Alausa, Ikeja, the state capital, has been disrupted by police.
Recall that Pensioners under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, and the Contributory Pension Scheme have been staging a protest at the government house since last week.
They are demanding the implementation of approved pension increases and wage awards.
The retirees also urged the Lagos State Government to pay outstanding pension arrears and other benefits they said were owed to them.
The protesters converged at the government premises to voice their grievances and demand government intervention in addressing issues affecting their welfare.
However, a melee broke out after police officers disrupted demonstrations and reportedly tear-gassed the demonstrators, forcing some of them to scamper for safety.
The development created a tense atmosphere at the scene as the retirees expressed disgust over the use of force against them while demanding the payment of their entitlements.
The pensioners maintained that their demands were centred on the implementation of pension-related increases, payment of outstanding arrears and other benefits due to them.
The pensioners had issued an August 31 deadline for the payment of their outstanding pension enhancement and wage award.
