How Manchester City Went Top Without Playing
Arsenal arrived on the south coast with four wins from four. They left with a defeat that handed City first place on goal difference without kicking a ball on Saturday. Goal difference at the top now reads City +6 to Arsenal’s +4.
City are the only side in the division with a perfect record. Enzo Maresca has settled in quickly after taking over from Pep Guardiola, who stepped down in the summer. They host Sunderland today, and the match-day model gave City roughly a 72 per cent chance of winning. A victory would put them on 15 points, three clear of Arsenal.
Brighton Make the Loudest Statement of the Week
Brighton took third place with the biggest result of the weekend. Pascal Gross and 19-year-old Charalampos Kostoulas scored from long range in the first half, and summer signing Chema Andres headed in a corner for the third. Arsenal had not lost by three goals or more since May 2023, when Brighton also beat them 3-0.
It was a good week all round for Fabian Hürzeler. Brighton beat Coventry 5-0 the weekend before, then came from two goals down to win 3-2 at Manchester United in the League Cup. They sit on 10 points and have already scored heavily. In an expected-goals table published after four rounds, Squawka noted that Brighton had scored 13 goals from 8.92 xG, the best finishing return in the league. That kind of overperformance rarely lasts a full season, but at the moment Brighton look like a side enjoying itself.
Brentford and Everton Stay Unbeaten
Brentford are fourth after a 3-0 win over Chelsea on Friday night. Keith Andrews’ team have drawn three of their five games and lost none. Everton are level with them on nine points after a 1-0 home win over Ipswich, and David Moyes has an unbeaten start at the Hill Dickinson Stadium to build on.
Leeds are also unbeaten. Daniel Farke’s side beat Newcastle 4-1 on Monday night and sit sixth with eight points from four games. They play Crystal Palace at home on Sunday with a game in hand on several rivals.
The Middle of the Table Is Tightly Packed
Three clubs share eight points behind Leeds. Hull City are the story among them. They are back in the top flight after nine years and have lost only once. Newcastle beat Hull 2-1 on Saturday to move level with them, a good bounce for Matthias Jaissle after the heavy defeat at Leeds.
Chelsea have dropped to ninth. Xabi Alonso’s side won a seven-goal thriller against Brighton on 30 August, but the defeat at Brentford leaves them on seven points from five. Ipswich, Forest and Aston Villa are all separated by only a point or two.
Liverpool and Manchester United Have Work to Do
Liverpool are unbeaten but sit tenth. Andoni Iraola has drawn three of his first four league games and has six points to show for them. They visit Bournemouth on Sunday, where the pre-match model made them narrow favourites at about 44 per cent.
Manchester United are 13th with four points after losing 1-0 at home to City on 13 September. Michael Carrick’s side scored five against Ipswich earlier in the month, so the goals are there. Consistency is not. They visit bottom club Fulham on Sunday.
Tottenham and Fulham Sit at the Bottom
The bottom of the table is unforgiving, with three clubs relegated at the end of the season. Fulham are last with a single point from four matches. Tottenham are 19th on two points after a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday. They are the only club yet to win a league game after five rounds. Roberto De Zerbi has some fixing to do before the international break ends.
Coventry are 18th but had a lift on Saturday, beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 for their first win of the campaign. That result came after a 5-0 loss to Brighton, and Frank Lampard will hope it settles a squad that has waited 25 years to return to this level.

How the Premier League Table Is Decided
Three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a defeat. If clubs finish level on points, the order is settled by goal difference first (goals scored minus goals conceded), then by goals scored. If that still fails to separate teams competing for the title, European places or survival, head-to-head records come into play.
The top four qualify for the Champions League. Fifth place is expected to take a Europa League spot, subject to the FA Cup result and UEFA coefficient rules. The bottom three are relegated to the Championship. This season, Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City replaced West Ham United, Burnley and Wolves.
