Court sends UNILORIN, KWASU, Kwara Poly students to jail for internet fraud (PHOTOS)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday secured the conviction of Abubakar Abdulbashit Opeyemi, a final year Student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN).

Two other undergraduates charged with offences bordering on love scam and internet fraud were sentenced.

They are Alimi Abiodun and Idowu Rasaq Olarewaju, students of Kwara State University (KWASU) in Molete, and Kwara State Polytechnic in Ilorin.

Justice Mahmood Abdulgafar of the Kwara State High Court, Ilorin, slammed jail terms after finding them guilty of various offences brought by the EFCC.

The trio, arraigned on separate charges, pleaded guilty to the charges.

Relying on their plea and exhibits tendered, Justice Abdulgafar held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubts.

Abdulbashit Opeyemi was sentenced to six months imprisonment, which shall be suspended for one year.

The judge ordered that the convict’s iPhones, HP Laptop used to commit the crime and a draft of N50,000 he raised as restitution, be forfeited to the Federal Government.

For Abiodun, the judge handed him three months imprisonment on count one and one year imprisonment on count two, which shall be suspended for one year.

Abiodun will forfeit his iPhone and N352,000 raised as restitution to the Federal Government.

For Idowu, Justice Abdulgafar sentenced him to six months imprisonment, which shall be suspended for six months.

Similarly, Idowu will forfeit a 2014 Toyota Venza, 2 iPhones, HP Laptop, and N404, 414 in his First Bank account to the Federal Government.

The judge concluded by saying, “The sentences are without option of fine”.
