The Kuje Prison in Abuja, reportedly came under serious explosion and gunshot by suspected bandits on Tuesday night.
According to Daily Trust, residents said that sounds of gunshots were first heard around 10pm.
A resident of the area, Joshua Friday, said that the shootings have been ongoing for the last 20 minutes, PUNCH reports.
Friday said the situation has caused panic in the area.
He said, “Currently in Kuje and the shooting has been going on for almost 20 minutes now. I can’t tell you what is happening whether it is a robbery or not but we have been hearing that gunshots repeatedly around the area the prison is located. We are all scared as I speak to you. ”
It’s unclear where the attack happened but there were reports that it was the prison that was attacked.
The details of the incident were sketchy at the time of this report.
Twitter users, who commented on the incident, have advised resident of an estate close to the prison to stay indoors.
The spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Umar Abubakar, could not be reached to comment on the incident as at the time of filling this report.
