It was a tragic day on Wednesday in the ancient city of IJebu-Ode when a couple, Sola Olaniyan, his wife, Mojisola, and their 9-month-old baby, Ogooluwa, were crushed to death on Ibadan Road, Ogun State.

It was gathered that Sola, a motorcyclist, was conveying his wife and child to a destination in Ijebu-Ode when yet-to-be-identified truck driver rammed into them on Wednesday.

The motorcyclist’s wife and child were said to have died on the spot.

According to PUNCH, an eyewitness, Sijuade Owolabi, said the motorcyclist, who sustained injuries, died while being rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Abeokuta, for treatment.

Sijuade said, “The accident happened around 8pm and the mother and her child died at that spot but the husband who was severely wounded, was rushed to the state hospital and immediately referred to FMC, Abeokuta, but he died at the entrance.”

“The truck driver tried escaping but he was caught by some motorcyclists and his truck was burnt at Imowo, Ijebu-Ode. Angry mobs attacked the driver but he was saved by policemen.”

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the incident said that the truck driver attempted escaping but was apprehended by motorcyclists who chased after him.

Akinbiyi said, “The presumed dead family members have been taken to the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode by TRACE officials and others. The fatal accident involved a hit-and-run truck driver, an Okada rider, a woman and her son on Ibadan Road, Ijebu-Ode, opposite the UBA.

“According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the truck was at high speed and it over-ran the nursing mother. The angry Okada riders and hoodlums took the hit-and-run driver to Igbeba Police Station after pursuing and catching up with him.

“The dead persons involved in the hit-and-run crash are members of the same family. The Okada rider was the father; the woman was his wife, while the minor was their child.”

The spokesperson, Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State, Florence Okpe, also confirmed the incident.
