10 crew men of a fishing trawler have been saved by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT in Lagos.

The trawler is a commercial fishing boat built specifically to use trawls.

The ship, which was christened OLOKUN XII, capsized in the early hours of Monday in the Lagos waterway.

The Western Naval Command’s public relations officer, Commander Edward Yeibo, released a statement to announce the intervention.

According to the speaker, OLOKUN XII, the capsized trawler, was being towed by OLOKUN IV, another trawler.

Yeibo stated that the ship sank following a collision with the MSC CORUNA, a commercial ship.

“NNS BEECROFT patrol team were on routine patrol which led to the prompt rescue of 10 crew members from the trawler”, he disclosed.

Those rescued were handed over to the officials of their employers, Barnaly Fishing Company Limited.

Commander NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Malami Haruna urged seafarers to navigate with caution and observe international regulations at all times.
