Bandits kill Councillor in Niger

Bandits have killed Hon. Sale Yakubu Allawa, a councillor in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to Premium Times, the State Commissioner for Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Emmanuel Umar, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview on Saturday, January 21, 2023, said the deceased and one other person were onboard a motorcycle going to his hometown, Allawa, when they were stopped by the terrorists who shot and killed the councillor immediately on Thursday, January 19.

The councillor was asked to get down from the motorcycle and the terrorists opened fire on him. The other occupant of the motorcycle was spared.

The Commissioner said that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the criminals. Umar called on the villagers to avail the security agents useful information that could easily lead to the arrest of the criminals.

It was gathered that the deceased was a former member of the vigilante group who might have been blacklisted by the terrorist groups in the area.

According to Vanguard, a source who spoke on Sunday, said angry youths in the area swung into action by embarking on a search of the bandits in the area and eventually succeeded in apprehending an informant at Gwada town.

The informant it was gathered has been handed over to the police for more investigation and prosecution.

Vanguard reported that one of the youth leader who wanted anonymity said, “We will continue to work hand in hand with all Security Agencies in the area towards exposing and apprehending both informants and criminals alike in the area because we are tired of these incessant killings in the area.”
