Suspected herdsmen have killed one and injured another after invading Ugboanyim-Aniyi community in Amagunze, Nkanu East Local Government of Enugu State.

According to PUNCH, a community leader and former President-General of the community, Francis Nnamani, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday, said the attack took place on Monday.

He lamented that residents have deserted the community for fear of more attacks.

Nnamani identified the victims as Anike Nwaogbu and his brother, Emma Ogbu.

He said, “While Anike Nwa-Ogbu has been confirmed dead, his brother, Emma Ogbu, has been rushed to the hospital. It will only take the mercy of God for him to survive.

“Residents of Ugboanyim-Aniyi have deserted the community. The traditional ruler of Okeani/Aniyi Community, Igwe Emmanuel, the President General, Chief Ifeanyi Nnaji and other well-meaning people of Amagunze are calling on the Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and other relevant authorities to come to the aid of our people.

“The activities of herdsmen have scared our people from going to farms as our people are being maimed and crops being destroyed.” When contacted on the telephone, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident.

Ndukwe said, “Manhunt for the assailant(s) and investigation have been launched into the reported case of the alleged murder of a 70-year-old Ani Nwaogbu (male), from suspected machete cuts, by yet-to-be-identified assailants.

“The victim is said to have gone fishing at Ubeagu River in Nkanu East LGA on February 6, 2023, where his lifeless body was found today, February 7, 2023, at the river bank.

“The body was immediately moved to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead and the corpse was deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

“Meanwhile, one Emmanuel Ogbu aged 67, who was also attacked during the search of the deceased, was taken to the hospital and is responding to treatment.”
