Court sends Lagos man to prison for beating neighbour to death

One Monsuru Babatunde has been remanded in the Ikoyi Correctional Centre for the alleged murder of one Azeez Mobolaji.

Babatunde was remanded on Thursday by Magistrate P. E. Nwaka of Yaba Magistrates’ Court on two counts of conspiracy and murder.

The defendants and his friends, still at large, were said to have taken the deceased to an uncompleted building on August 7, 2022, around 10.20 pm at the Aseji, Ogombe area of the state and beat him, leaving him unconscious.

Mobolaji was said to have died shortly after the beating.

According to the police prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, the offences committed contravened and is punishable under Section 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.

The charge read in part, “That you, Monsuru Babatunde, and others still at large on August 7, 2022, around 4.30 pm at Ogombo Police Station, in the Lagos State Magisterial District did cause the death of one Azeez Mobolaji by beating him up and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”

The charge was read to the defendant but his plea was not taken.

Following the reading of the charge, the prosecutor prayed the court to remand him for 30 days pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.

Granting the request, the magistrate, Nwaka, ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending DPP advice.

Nwaka adjourned the case till May 25, 2023, for mention
