Dr. Baffa Bichi, the Secretary to the Kano State Government (SSG), recently provided an explanation regarding the demolition of the Tumbin Giwa roundabout at Kano Government House.

During a radio interview, Bichi stated that the roundabout was demolished due to the presence of a Christian cross, which goes against the teachings of Islam.

Additionally, he revealed that the roundabout was causing traffic congestion and accidents. Bichi elaborated, stating, “If you take an aerial picture of the roundabout, you will notice a cross. Such displays are not permissible in Kano, especially at the Government House roundabout, as they contradict our cultural norms, values, and Islamic teachings.”

Bichi further explained that the roundabout obstructed visibility and hindered the flow of traffic, leading to delays and accidents along Government House road. He acknowledged that this was not a wise decision and emphasized the need to address the issue.

Furthermore, Bichi highlighted another concern related to the Hotoro interchange flyover, which also featured a prominent cross. He emphasized the importance of examining this matter as well, noting that the presence of two large crosses—on the Government House roundabout and the flyover—would not be tolerated.

Regarding the demolition activities carried out in various areas, Bichi expressed his disapproval of constructing shops within mosques and residential areas. He deemed this practice inappropriate and emphasized the government’s intention to rectify the situation. Bichi clarified, “We have requested individuals in these improperly constructed areas to remove their belongings. We provided prior notice on multiple occasions, even before taking office.”

When questioned about compensation for the affected individuals, the SSG encouraged the victims to pursue their claims against those who deceived them and caused financial harm.
