- Justice Dije Abdu Aboki becomes Kano State’s first female substantive Chief Judge, sworn in after confirmation
- She pledges to enhance justice accessibility and delivery while Governor urges cooperation between branches for progress
Justice Dije Abdu Aboki has been sworn to become Kano State’s first female substantive Chief Judge.
WITHIN NIGERIA reports that former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje appointed Justice Aboki as acting Chief Justice on March 9 following the retirement of former Justice Nura Sair.
On July 6, the Kano House of Assembly confirmed Justice Aboki’s appointment as the state’s chief judge, following a letter sent to the house by the incumbent governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Following this, Justice Aboki was sworn in as the state’s first female substantive chief judge on Monday during a ceremony at Kano State Government House’s Africa House.
She promised, among other things, to improve justice delivery and make justice accessible to all, regardless of social or other classes.
In his remarks, Governor Yusuf urged Justice Aboki to view the executive and legislature as partners rather than competitors with the judiciary.
He also urged her to lead a judiciary that will back the government’s efforts to restore the Kano Urban Development Masterplan, which he claimed was sabotaged by the previous administration.
He found it incomprehensible that judges would issue restraining orders against the government in its efforts to recover property and restore it to its original status, including court buildings that had previously been demolished and awarded for the construction of business plazas.
Also speaking, Abubakar Malami (SAN), the immediate past Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, eulogised the first female CJ, describing her as a no-nonsense woman who had made a name for herself in the legal and judicial professions, where she was well known for her discipline, commitment, and passion for justice.
