The Lagos State Government has apprehended about 30 individuals for violating environmental laws, specifically for improper waste disposal and blatant disregard of state regulations.

These offenders are set to face charges in a magistrate court next Monday, as revealed in a statement by Folashade Kadiri, the Director of Public Affairs for the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

This enforcement aligns with the state’s unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for environmental violations, employing a collaborative effort between LAWMA and the state Environmental Sanitation Corps.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, emphasized that these arrests and subsequent prosecutions of those engaging in haphazard waste disposal signify a departure from the previous leniency. He underlined the state’s determination to uphold order and cleanliness within the city.

Wahab stressed that the days of clandestine waste dumping under the cover of darkness were gone, warning that anyone caught in such acts would face legal consequences. This stern approach aims to deter and caution others.

Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of LAWMA, encouraged households to adopt the practice of segregating waste at its source, sorting recyclable and non-recyclable materials, and utilizing the designated waste bins endorsed by LAWMA.

This strategy, he pointed out, would significantly reduce the problem of indiscriminate waste disposal, thus preserving the city’s aesthetics.
