The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has called upon both politicians and voters in Kogi State to allow the police and other sister security agencies, who have been deployed for Saturday’s gubernatorial election, to carry out their duties without being subjected to any form of blackmail.

Egbetokun made this statement on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Independent Electoral Commission in Lokoja.

He further encouraged politicians to adhere to the rules laid out by the Constitution and to conduct the election in a manner that avoids creating political tensions before, during, and after the election.

He lamented the way the police and other Security agencies were being blackmailed in the course of doing their constitutional duty of ensuring free and fair election processes.

He, however, said that “no amount of blackmail will stop us from performing constitutional duties of ensuring that the election is conducted in a peaceful atmosphere.”

He warned would-be troublemakers to rethink or relocate especially during the election from the state as it will be too unpleasant for them.

“Election will come and go but we will still be living together as neighbours, brothers, sisters and families. How will that be possible if you have created tension among yourselves because of an election.”
