- Tragedy struck in Kogi East as Umoru Iduh was shot dead while allegedly attempting to snatch electoral materials
- Iduh’s disruptive actions at Agala-Ogane polling unit led to intervention by a suspected vigilante, resulting in his tragic death
Tragedy struck at the Agala-Ogane polling unit in the Anyigba metropolis of Dekina Local Government Area, Kogi East, as a young man identified as Umoru Iduh was reportedly shot dead around 10 am. The incident occurred when voting was about to commence, and Iduh was allegedly attempting to snatch electoral materials.
Eyewitnesses reported that Iduh forcefully took the Biometric Voter Authentication System (BVAS) and smashed it on the ground in an attempt to disrupt the voting process at the polling unit. Dissatisfied, he further stood on the equipment and repeatedly jumped on it, aiming to render it unusable.
Abdullahi Danjuma, an eyewitness who was present at the polling unit to cast his vote, recounted the shocking sequence of events. He mentioned that a person suspected to be a vigilante swiftly intervened, firing at Iduh and tragically ending his life on the spot.
The late Umoru Iduh, recently expressing interest in vying for the chairman position of the Anyigba garage load carrier association, leaves behind a grieving family—a wife and two children. He was the son of Alhassan Agolo, a well-known youth leader in the town.
Despite the unsettling incident, voting continued at the polling unit. Efforts to obtain a response from the state police command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Aya, and other election stakeholders proved unsuccessful as calls and text messages went unanswered. The tragic event adds a somber note to the ongoing electoral proceedings in Kogi.
