  • NNPP warns of potential crisis beyond Nigeria if denied mandate in Kano State; protests outcomes of governorship election at international offices
  • NNPP National Auditor emphasizes citizens’ disillusionment, urges Supreme Court to reinstate Kano’s mandate, and calls for global attention

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has issued a stern warning, stating that the denial of its mandate in Kano State could spark a crisis extending beyond Nigeria to other African nations. Ladipo Johnson, the National Auditor of NNPP, delivered a statement signed by the acting National Chairman, Abba Kawu Ali, during a protest at the offices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), European Union, American Embassy, and British High Commission on Wednesday. The protest aimed to express dissatisfaction with the outcomes of the Kano governorship election at the Tribunal and Appeal Court.

According to Johnson, there are covert attempts to subvert the will of the majority of the people in Kano State, who elected Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on March 18. He emphasized the charged atmosphere in Kano, with citizens feeling disillusioned after the 2019 general elections.

While the NNPP has taken the matter to the Supreme Court seeking redress, Johnson stressed the party’s commitment to pursuing its mandate within the bounds of the law. He urged the Supreme Court to uphold substantial justice by reinstating the mandate of the people of Kano State and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Expressing concern over the escalating tension in Kano, Johnson stated, “To say that there is a combustible mix of provocation and betrayal welling up in the minds of the citizens of Kano is an understatement. The people are bitter, enraged, exasperated, and fuming with fury. The security situation today in Kano State has become unprecedented.”

The NNPP cautioned that the consequences of hijacking the people’s mandate in Kano would reverberate not only in Nigeria but also across Africa and the world. The party called on global leaders to take note of this development.

Furthermore, the NNPP appealed to various stakeholders, including the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, Northern Governors Forum, Northern Senators Forum, Northern House of Representatives Forum, Northern Conference of Speakers, Northern Elders Forum, Northern Christian Association, and the Council of Ulamas from the 19 Northern States, to draw attention to the President and the Supreme Court, emphasizing the need for substantial justice for NNPP and the people of Kano.
