A suspected kidnapper has been killed in Delta State, the police have said.

DSP Bright Edafe, the state Police Public Relations Officer, in a statement on Wednesday, said other kidnappers escaped during operation.

The criminals were said to have abducted a victim (whose identity was withheld), as he was riding his motorcycle along Ashama Anu-Ugbo Farm in Nsukwa, in Aniocha South of Delta State, last weekend, demanding a ransom of N5,000,000.

After informing the police of the incident, an operation was launched to rescue the victim.

The statement on Wednesday reads: “On Saturday, December, 9 2023, around 12:10 hrs, acting on credible intelligence regarding the kidnappers’ plan to collect the demanded ransom, the Divisional Police Officer, CSP George Omunu, promptly mobilised the Divisional Patrol Teams with support from operatives of the command’s tactical teams and other security stakeholders within the Nsukwa area.

“The suspects were located at various points within the Egbudu-Akah bush, where the team thoroughly searched the bushes.

“Upon spotting the rescue team approaching from a distance, the kidnappers fired at the team. In response to this aggression, the police retaliated with superior firepower, forcing the captors to hastily flee, abandoning the male victim who was subsequently rescued unharmed.”

The statement added that the operational team later returned to the Egbudu-Akah bush, where one of the suspected kidnappers (name unknown) was apprehended with gunshot wounds.

“The suspect was rushed to General Hospital Isheagu for medical attention, where he later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

‘Another suspect is currently in custody while investigation is ongoing,” he added.
