The Niger State government has announced its intention to enforce a ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol in Suleja and eight other Local Government Areas within the state.
The statement issued by the Niger State Liquor and Licensing Board’s secretary, Ibrahim Muhammad Bonu, in Minna on Monday highlighted that the ban is set to commence on January 1, 2024.
Furthermore, the government disclosed plans to relocate certain beer joints within Minna, the state capital, beyond an eight-kilometer radius from the post office.
Emphasizing compliance with existing laws governing the board, the statement identified nine local government areas, including Suleja, in the initial list of prohibited zones.
The statement also sternly warned board members against engaging in illicit activities or seeking favors from beer parlour operators, cautioning that any staff found engaging in such actions would face consequences.
He said, “We are calling on all vendors to abide by the relevant extant laws establishing the board.”
“The law establishing the board has the mandate to control the activities of all liquor vendors in the state and therefore, nine local government areas were on the first schedule of the prohibited areas, and Suleja happens to be among them, and as such, the board will ensure strict compliance with the law,” the statement added.
