- During police investigation, the defendant’s explanation lacked credibility
In a session at the Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja on Wednesday, a 22-year-old unemployed man named Odoh Ernest faced charges for allegedly snatching two cell phones valued at N820,000.
The police brought charges against Ernest, accusing him of theft and mischief.
Prosecution Counsel Mr. Steven Osho presented details stating that on Jan. 5, the complainant, Izong Stephenie from Area 10, Garki, reported the incident at Garki Police Station. Osho explained that the defendant approached the complainant and her sister after they left the supermarket, forcefully taking their cell phones.
According to Osho, the defendant stole an Iphone 12 pro max belonging to the complainant and a Techno camo 10 phone owned by her sister, totaling N820,000.
During police investigation, the defendant’s explanation lacked credibility, as per Osho.
The alleged act violates the provisions of sections 287 and 327 of the Penal Code.
Despite the charges, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
Judge Aliyu Kagarko granted the defendant bail set at N1 million, requiring one surety of equal amount residing within the court’s jurisdiction and possessing credible means of identification.
The case is adjourned for hearing on Jan. 24.
