FG plans repatriation of Boko Haram displaced refugees

  • During a visit to the Muna Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Jere Local Government Area, the Federal Commissioner of the NCRMI provided food items and relief materials to five hundred households

The Federal Government has finalized plans to repatriate refugees from Cameroon, Chad, and Niger Republic back to communities in Borno State, where they were displaced by the Boko Haram Insurgency.

Aliyu Tijjani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, revealed this information while visiting a satellite city constructed for refugees affected by the Boko Haram insurgency in Marua, Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State.

He said, “We discussed on the issue of evacuation of our refugees from Cameroon, Niger and Chad and it was agreed that a tripartite meeting will hold and the commission will return to the office.

“We will sit down to come up with processes and procedures which we will apply in evacuating our people that are living in Cameroon, Niger and Chad. This is going to be handled by the commission, the government of Borno State and UNCHR.”

According to him, similar satellite cities with sustainable sources of livelihood will be developed across the nation to resettle displaced persons.

During a visit to the Muna Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Jere Local Government Area, the Federal Commissioner of the NCRMI provided food items and relief materials to five hundred households, including those affected by fire outbreaks in the camp.

Following that, the Federal Commissioner toured skills acquisition centers set up for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and the satellite city in Marua.

He committed to commencing the resettlement process in the first quarter of 2024.
