Bayero University, Kano (BUK), marked its 38th convocation ceremony by bestowing honorary doctorate degrees upon Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, and President of the Africa Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina.
Barau received a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa), while Adesina was honoured with a Doctor of Business Administration, recognizing their significant contributions to education, youth development, and other spheres.
Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, the Vice Chancellor of BUK, highlighted the unanimous approval of their nominations for the prestigious awards by both the Senate and the institution’s management. He praised their dedication and impact on the lives of Nigerians across various sectors.
During the ceremony, 180 students graduated with first-class degrees, adding to the impressive tally of 11,284 graduates thus far, including 317 PhD recipients and 3,770 master’s degree holders.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged the graduating students to aspire for excellence as they embark on their post-university journeys.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Adesina expressed gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him, acknowledging Bayero University’s reputation for excellence. He pledged his commitment to supporting the university’s growth and development.
Similarly, Deputy Senate President Jibrin expressed appreciation for the recognition, vowing to redouble his efforts in advancing education and other sectors in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of leveraging opportunities to contribute meaningfully to national development.
The award ceremony drew dignitaries from various sectors, including serving and former senators, members of the House of Representatives, Education Minister Mamman Tahir, TETFund Executive Secretary Sunday Echono, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and Emir of Kano Aminu Ado Bayero, among others.
