FG Announces Commencement of Port Harcourt-Aba Train Services in March

The Federal Government revealed on Saturday that train operations on the Port Harcourt to Aba route are set to commence by the end of March.

This development, part of the expansive Port Harcourt-Maiduguri railroad project initiated by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, marks a significant step forward in the country’s transportation infrastructure.

Mr. Fidet Okhiria, the Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), announced in Port Harcourt following a delegation’s test run of the reconstructed Eastern Narrow Gauge Rail line.

Okhiria noted that workers diligently put final touches on the tracks to ensure the smooth operation of train services by the designated timeline.

Expressing satisfaction with the progress made, Okhiria highlighted the directive from the Minister of Transportation, Seidu Alkali, to extend the rail connectivity to Onne Port. He emphasized the importance of this expansion to enhance transportation efficiency and bolster economic activities in the region.

Assuring the public of the project’s timely completion, Okhiria revealed plans to introduce semi-automatic signalling systems to enhance safety measures along the rail tracks.

To prioritize passenger safety and operational efficiency, Okhiria underscored the need for cooperation from local communities and urged traders to refrain from encroaching on the rail lines.

Despite potential adjustments in transport fares due to rising diesel costs, the government remains committed to ensuring affordable and secure rail transportation for all citizens.

As preparations for the commencement of train services progress, the NRC continues to collaborate with stakeholders to streamline project execution and ensure adherence to safety protocols across all rail networks nationwide.
