Aboki Danjuma, Imo commissioner of police has warned command officers in the state against bullying, assaulting of civilians while on duty.
Danjuma said that their responsibility is protect the law and respect the fundamental human rights of citizens while performing their official duties.
The CP who spoke at a confidence building patrol in the command headquarter iss in Owerri said that it had received numerous reports of police officers intimidating, harassing, and physically abusing civilians.
He described the right of individuals as sacrosanct and sacred, he characterised these actions as unjustified and lacking legal support.
“Individuals and citizens should not be made to believe that police are their enemies rather than friends, due to your approach to them. We should try as much as possible to be friendly to them and instill that feeling of confidence in the them that police is your friend,” he said.
“In your own part, civilians should also try and assist the officers discharge their duties in more civilized way by being law-abiding and desist from involving in act or activities that will implicate them.”
The commissioner of police emphasised the command’s commitment to ensuring safety and security, promoting a more cordial policing environment and encouraging residents to assist in lawful policing.
