  • Governor Hyacinth Alia suspends all mining operations in Benue State to conduct a thorough verification exercise for accurate mining data
  • Sixty ‘mining marshals’ from NSCDC are inaugurated to combat illegal mining activities across Benue State

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has issued a directive to suspend all mining activities pending a comprehensive verification exercise to gather accurate mining data. The announcement came during the inauguration of 60 ‘mining marshals’ from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), who are tasked with curbing illegal mining across Benue State.

Represented by his deputy, Barrister Sam Ode, Governor Alia emphasized his administration’s zero tolerance for illegality, urging civil defence personnel to remain vigilant in combating criminal activities. He underscored the importance of collaboration between the marshals and the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee (MIREMCO) to safeguard the interests of Benue residents.

Governor Alia disclosed that he had convened meetings with members of the Miners Association and issued instructions for suspending all mining operations until MIREMCO could compile comprehensive data on miners. He stressed that the verification must be completed before resuming mining activities to ensure transparency and regulatory compliance.

The governor urged the security apparatus, joint task force on illegal mining, and MIREMCO to prioritize the well-being of the people and boost internally generated revenue (IGR) by enforcing regulations effectively.
