The Cross River State government has announced its intention to provide free healthcare services for elderly citizens aged 70 and above and children under five.
Dr. Henry Ayuk, the Commissioner for Health, revealed this initiative during an address to journalists on World Health Day in Calabar. He explained that offering free healthcare to specific age groups aims to promote health equity.
The healthcare services will be delivered through well-equipped health facilities, supplemented by outreach programs to educate communities on health-related issues.
Dr. Ayuk highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure the functionality of hospitals across all local government areas. This includes renovations and reconstructions of healthcare facilities such as the General Hospital in Ikom and the Cottage Hospital in Oban.
He stressed the importance of collaboration with various agencies to improve healthcare services and urged prioritising health spending over unnecessary expenses.
Dr. Ayuk emphasized that access to good-quality healthcare should be considered a right rather than a privilege. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to providing comprehensive primary healthcare services to all residents.
