  • The dam burst near the Rift Valley town of Mai Mahiu, washing away houses and cutting off a road.

A devastating flooding in Kenya has left at least fourty-two people dead, authorities have said.

The incident happened early on Monday after a dam burst in the Mai Mahiu area of the East African country.

Kenya has been grappling with heavy downpours and floods for weeks on end now.

The governor of Nakuru County, Susan Kihika, confirmed the incident, adding fourty-two persons have been confirmed dead so far and that there are more victims.

“Forty-two dead, it’s a conservative estimate. There are still more in the mud. We are working on recovery,” the governor said.

The dam burst near the Rift Valley town of Mai Mahiu, washing away houses and cutting off a road.

Officials have previously said that 76 people had lost their lives in Kenya since March, as heavier than usual rains batter East Africa, compounded by the El Nino weather pattern.

Recall that dozens of people were killed in May 2018 when a dam burst in Solai, also in Nakuru County, during torrential rains and floods.
