- Despite over 80% payment, contractor deserted project, prompting governor’s demand for immediate return to complete work
Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara warned the contractor responsible for the Bori Internal Roads project, who allegedly absconded with N4bn mobilization funds.
During his visit to the site on Saturday, Governor Fubara expressed frustration that the contractor had deserted the project despite receiving more than 80 percent of the agreed payment.
Asserting the contractor’s actions as unacceptable, the governor demanded an immediate return to the site to complete the project, warning of severe repercussions otherwise.
“This project was initiated before my tenure. However, I have facilitated two payments for its progress. The total project value exceeds N6bn.
“In June 2023, I authorized the first N2bn payment, followed by another N2bn in December 2023, accounting for approximately 80 percent of the project’s value.
“I am baffled by the notion that we lack interest in completing a project within my Senatorial District,” the governor remarked.
Governor Fubara expressed dismay that despite the payments, the contractor failed to mobilize resources to the site and even dismissed a staff member for merely relaying a Ministry of Works inquiry.
“My visit today aims to address rumours on social media suggesting deliberate abandonment of the Bori Internal Roads project, possibly driven by political motives.
“I refrain from naming the contractor to avoid personalization, but the individual knows their obligations. They must return to the site promptly or face consequential actions,” emphasized the governor.
Assuring the residents who showed support during his visit, Governor Fubara reiterated his commitment to completing the road project for their benefit, emphasizing its importance for community connectivity and development.
