Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State announced that his administration has helped 11,957 out-of-school children return to their studies through the Project Zero Programme.
Speaking at the Children’s Day celebration at Police College, Ikeja, Mr. Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, highlighted efforts to boost school attendance.
He noted that nine new schools were established in busy and remote areas, now serving 4,588 students, including 2,310 girls and 2,278 boys.
“We have also improved many existing schools, completing over 1,500 projects that include building, renovating, and providing new furniture,” he said.
Governor Sanwo-Olu announced enhanced security measures for public schools, including fences and CCTV cameras, and collaboration with security agencies.
Over 2,000 new teachers in various subjects were hired in May 2023, and a Digital Situation Room was established to monitor school performance. He encouraged children to dream big and assured them of the government’s support.
During the Children’s Day celebration, the governor emphasized the state’s commitment to providing a conducive environment and opportunities for children’s success.
The 2024 theme, “Advocate for Children: Policies & Actions that Protect and Support Children’s Well-being,” calls for action and safety. Commissioner Jamiu Alli-Balogun praised the administration’s dedication to education and urged children to excel academically and in co-curricular activities.
