Jigawa: Six crushed to death, seven injured as driver rams vehicle into traders

No fewer than six persons have lost their lives after they were crushed to death by a canter driver in Jigawa State.

Another seven reportedly suffered varying degrees of severe injuries during incident which happened on Wednesday.

The 45-year-old canter driver, Tasi’u Ashiru, was said to have lost control of the vehicle and plunged it into the market, leaving death and sorrow in his wake.

The incident happened at Sabon Garin Takanebu, Miga LGA, along the Jahun to Gujungu Road.

The spokesman of the State police command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the incident to newsmen.

According to him, “On June 12, 2024, at about 2100hrs, there was a fatal motor vehicle accident at Sabon Garin Takanebu, Miga LGA, along the Jahun to Gujungu Road, involving a vehicle with Reg no. XA 519 KUR Mitsubishi Canter driven by a 45-year-old Tasi’u Ashiru of Kara village, Ajingi LGA, Kano State.”

“On reaching the Sabon Gari market, the driver lost control and ran into marketers, as a result of which ten (10) persons sustained various degrees of injuries while three (3) died on the spot.”

DSP Shiisu said that a team of policemen rushed to the scene and conveyed both the corpses and the injured to the Jahun General Hospital.

According to him, three additional persons died on their way to the hospital, bringing the total number of deaths to six.

The victims were confirmed dead by the medical doctor on call, while the remaining seven victims are currently on admission and responding to treatment.

The corpses were later released to their relatives for burial.

The driver has been taken into custody, and an investigation is in progress.

The Jigawa State Police Commissioner, CP AT Abdullahi, prayed to Almighty Allah for mercy, granting the deceased eternal peace.

He also pleaded with motorists to drive carefully and with due caution, warning that anyone caught driving recklessly or causing deaths through careless driving would be arrested and face appropriate legal action
