The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has clarified that it does not intend to abolish patrol points in Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, and Enugu states.
This clarification was issued by the FRSC Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, to address reports suggesting that the corps had initiated moves to remove the patrol points.
These reports stemmed from a statement made by the Zonal Commanding Officer of Zone 9 Headquarters in Enugu, Uche Chukwurah, during his maiden visit to the Abia FRSC command in Umuahia on June 21. Chukwurah had announced the abolition of static patrol/patrol points in the South-East states of Abia, Imo, Enugu, and Ebonyi, and explained that the zone had adopted mobile patrol operations instead of the static checkpoint style of patrol.
The circulating report suggested that the FRSC had abolished its patrol points in the southeastern states alone. Ogungbemide, however, clarified that Chukwurah was misquoted and that the patrol points were not being removed.
“Nothing can be further from the truth as the statement was not only misleading but capable of giving wrong information to unsuspecting members of the public on the intention of the FRSC management on the ongoing operational rejigging, which is not targeted at the southeastern states of the country, but the nation at large.
“Consequently, any meaning read to the original statement attributed to the Zonal Commanding Officer of Zone 9 Headquarters to create the impression that the FRSC is abolishing or intends to abolish patrol in the southeast is distorted, misleading and should be disregarded,” Ogungbemide stated.
He stressed that the FRSC was focused on enhancing its operational strategies to improve the capacity of its personnel.
