Gunmen have abducted 11 passengers on the Amechi-Idodo axis of the Enugu-Abakaliki highway, Punch reports.
Among the victims were students from tertiary institutions traveling in a commercial bus from Awka, Anambra State, to Abakaliki.
The abduction occurred on Wednesday when the bus was intercepted in the Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu, a location now notorious for kidnappings.
A relative of one of the victims stated that the kidnappers have demanded a ransom of N30 million.
Ebonyi Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed that the command is actively addressing the situation. He mentioned that the Commissioner of Police, Augustina Ogbodo, is collaborating with her Enugu State counterpart, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, to combat the rise in kidnappings along this highway.
Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has directed security agencies to intensify efforts to eradicate criminal activities in the area.
