The Enugu Innovative Youth group has declared its intention to abstain from participating in any “destructive protests,” despite Nigeria’s worsening hunger and economic difficulties.

During a press conference in Enugu on Friday, the group, representing all 17 local government areas of the state, affirmed its commitment to peace and stability.

Publicity Secretary Jude Aniagu acknowledged the country’s severe issues, including widespread hunger, financial struggles, and high debt, but highlighted significant progress under Governor Peter Mbah’s administration.

While recognizing the justification for the planned Nationwide Hunger Protest from August 1-10, 2024, Aniagu urged youths in Enugu State to reconsider joining the protest, emphasizing the positive developments in the state.

“We are aware of the risk that the proposed protest could be hijacked by bad actors,” Aniagu stated. “Enugu State is one of the most peaceful and productive states in the federation. We cannot let it fall into anarchy and infrastructural decay.”

The group called on both the Federal and State Governments to engage Enugu youths in dialogue to address unemployment and poverty, particularly among young people.

They noted that the Enugu State Government has plans for job creation through strategic programs in IT and entrepreneurship.

“We must not risk our lives in this protest but instead strive to benefit from the state’s vision for job creation and development,” Aniagu added. “Any protest in Enugu could undo the efforts of Governor Mbah to revive our state through massive infrastructural projects. Hence, we call for calm and peace.”
