S’Court Judgement: The Last Has Not Been Heard About LG Autonomy – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed that the issue is far from settled despite the recent Supreme Court judgment on Local Government Autonomy. The party emphasized that the relationship between state governments and local government councils remains crucial and complex.

During a press conference held at the party headquarters on Sunday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, addressed the matter, highlighting the ongoing discussions and concerns surrounding the Supreme Court’s decision.

Responding to a question about the stance of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on the judgment, Ologunagba remarked, “We believe that if there are reforms to be made on the local government, it should be done in conjunction with the governors, not by the fiat of the federal government.”

He stressed the importance of involving state governors in any decision-making processes regarding local governments, as they are more connected to the communities they serve. “The federal government doesn’t see people in my village; it is the governors. Therefore, if there are concerns, then it should be in conjunction with the local government so that the benefits can go to the people, not by some fiat,” Ologunagba added.

Ologunagba pointed out that the state government is largely responsible for local governance, as it is the first point of contact for issues at the local level. He also mentioned that the constitution provides for local government joint accounts involving state governments.

“The state government has a duty, has a responsibility… I do not think we have seen the end of that,” Ologunagba stated, indicating that the PDP will continue to review the Supreme Court’s decision and engage in further discussions with its governors to ensure efficient local governance.

He concluded by expressing the party’s concern that the federal government’s attempt to control local governments could lead to further bureaucratic complications, potentially creating more issues at the grassroots level. The PDP intends to continue its dialogue on the matter to protect the interests of local governments and ensure effective governance.
