16 killed, 3,838 displaced as flood ravages Jigawa

A catastrophic flooding in Jigawa state has claimed the lives of sixteen people.

The disaster also rendered 3,834 homeless in ten local government areas while washing away 2,744 hectares of farmland.

The Executive Secretary of Jigawa State Emergency and Management Agency (SEMA), Dr Haruna Mairiga confirmed the incident.

Speaking with newsmen, he disclosed that the flood wreaked unimaginable havoc on the people.

He disclosed that thousands of people were displaced in the affected local governments displaced with their houses and farms were destroyed.

He said some of the displaced persons are taking shelter at primary schools while others relocated to their relatives villages.

The affected local governments include Buji, Kafin Hausa, Auyo, Hadejia, Birniwa, Gwaram, Malam Madori, Garki, Taura, Suletankarkar, Kaugama and Dutse.

Noting that more rain is expected during the season, he said the government is making efforts towards assisting the victims.
