- Many operators attempted to avoid arrest by falsely claiming their bikes belonged to soldiers
Operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce impounded 164 motorcycles, commonly known as “okada,” across various parts of the state yesterday, citing illegal operations.
The crackdown, ordered by Lagos State Commissioner of Police Adegoke Fayoade, took place along the Badagry Expressway, Mile 2, Second Rainbow Bus Stop, V-Naija Bus Stop, Alabasuru, and Berger Bus Stop.
Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele, Chairman of the Taskforce, revealed that many operators attempted to avoid arrest by falsely claiming their bikes belonged to soldiers.
“We encountered resistance from some okada operators who insisted the bikes were owned by soldiers and therefore untouchable,” Akerele said. “I quickly dispelled this notion, emphasizing that there are no sacred cows when it comes to restoring order on our roads.”
The seized motorcycles were taken to the task force headquarters for crushing.
Akerele also reminded uniformed personnel using okadas to ensure they are properly attired in their official regalia while riding. He urged commuters to avoid using illegal okadas, citing the safety and security risks posed by these operators, who are often used by criminals for quick getaways.
