Halliru Liman, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Wasagu Division in Kebbi State, was reportedly shot dead by a soldier at a checkpoint in Zamfara State.

The incident occurred while Liman was en route to Birnin Kebbi for a meeting.

ASP Yazid Abubakar, spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, stated that the tragic event took place in the Danmarke area of Bukkuyum Local Government Area, where military personnel attached to Operation Dadarin Daji stopped Liman. Despite identifying himself as a police officer, Liman was shot in the head by a soldier named Hassan, leading to his immediate death.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Zamfara State Police Command condemned the incident and called for a thorough investigation to ensure those responsible are held accountable. The command described the shooting as a “heinous crime” and a clear violation of inter-agency cooperation and rules of engagement.

“We condemn this unprovoked attack in the strongest possible terms and demand a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident,” the statement read. “The police and military must work together to maintain peace and security, not engage in violent confrontations that undermine public trust.”

The police extended their condolences to the family and colleagues of SP Halliru Liman and vowed to pursue justice in the case.
