  • Borno Governor Babagana Zulum sends a delegation to assess the impact of water overflow at Alau Dam, threatening Maiduguri
  • The delegation was assured that current conditions at Alau Dam do not pose a severe threat to Maiduguri’s safety

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has sent a high-powered delegation to assess the impact of water overflow at Alau Dam, threatening Maiduguri Metropolis and its surrounding areas.

The Alau Dam, which has a reservoir capacity of 112 million cubic meters, was initially designed to support irrigation activities along the Alau riverbank but is now also used to supply tap water to Maiduguri and Jere Local Government Area.

The delegation was led by the Secretary to the Borno State Government (SSG) and received at Alau Dam by Mohammed Zannah, the acting Managing Director of the Chad Basin Development Authority (CBDA).

The delegation included Baba Bukar Gujibawu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Evaluation; Adam Bababe, Executive Secretary of the Borno Geographic Information Service; Sadu Auno, Executive Secretary of the Borno State Road Maintenance Agency; and Dr. Mohammed Saidu Barkindo, Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency.

During a briefing to the SSG, Zannah stated that despite the high water level in the river causing the overflow, the current conditions do not pose a severe threat to the city. He assured that all necessary measures have been taken to control the situation.

Meanwhile, the SSG, Tijani, who visited the Alau Dam to assess the situation, reassured residents that the dam is not broken.
