- The IGP expressed deep regret over the tragic event
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the Homicide section of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja to launch a full investigation into the alleged killing of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. The incident occurred on September 4, 2024.
In a statement released on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the officers involved were identified as Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip from the Kwara State Command’s Department of Operations. The officers are currently in custody, pending further investigation.
The IGP expressed deep regret over the tragic event, extending his condolences to Ishola’s family and friends. He reassured the public that the police are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served.
Earlier reports by SaharaReporters had accused the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, of attempting to cover up the incident. Ishola’s brother, Abdullah, claimed the officers, who allegedly killed his brother, were trying to hide their actions. He further revealed that the officers were caught with the deceased’s personal belongings, including sneakers and a power bank.
Abdullah also disputed claims that his brother was killed during a protest over fuel price hikes, stating, “My brother was shot on Wednesday and died early Thursday due to blood loss at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH). How could he have participated in the protest?”
He urged the IGP to expedite the investigation and ensure that the officers face justice.
