Gunmen kill one, abduct journalists travelling to Uyo for Super Eagles match

  • The abducted pressmen were travelling to Uyo, the State capital, to cover the Super Eagles match against Libya in an African Nations Cup qualifier on Friday.

Gunmen have reportedly kidnapped some journalists travelling to cover an African Nations Cup qualifier in Akwa Ibom State.

The abducted pressmen were travelling to Uyo, the State capital, to cover the Super Eagles match against Libya on Friday.

The journalists, who were about 11 in number, were said to have been kidnapped on Wednesday.

According DAILY POST, they were travelling in a bus through Iseke, around the Ihiala area of Anambra when they were kidnapped..

A source privy to the incident that nine of the journalists have been rescued, while one is feared dead.

The source said on Thursday morning four of the victims are still being held in captivity.

The Police in Anambra have confirmed the incident.

The spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said men of the Command have been deployed to rescue the journalists.

He said a joint operation was underway to rescue the victims.

“We intercepted the information as was being shared on various social media platforms yesterday, and we went to work immediately.

“As I speak to you, a joint operation is ongoing. We are however not sure if they are in captivity or were able to escape.”

Ikenga said he has no information on the rescue of any of the victims, but assured that operatives of the Command were working to free the abducted newsmen
