The Small Scale Women Farmers Organisation in Nigeria (SWOFON) has raised concerns that food prices could rise further in 2025 if the challenges facing farmers are not addressed.

Speaking in Abuja during a forum commemorating the International Day of Rural Women and World Food Day, SWOFON highlighted issues such as insecurity, farmer-herder conflicts, lack of credit access, post-harvest losses, and insufficient mechanisation.

SWOFON’s FCT Coordinator, Comfort Sunday, stressed that despite the importance of smallholder women farmers in ensuring food security, their needs often go unmet. She called for more attention to challenges like land ownership and theft. Mercy Nnnana, SWOFON Secretary, urged the government to follow up on its state of emergency on food with concrete actions to resolve ongoing issues in the agriculture sector.

The forum was held in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria under the Scaling Up Public Investment in Agriculture (SUPIA) project.
