The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the vandalism of two towers along its 330kV Shiroro–Kaduna transmission lines, resulting in power outages in parts of Kano and Kaduna states.

In a statement on Friday, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said the damage occurred on both lines, disrupting electricity supply to affected areas.

The company is deploying its newly acquired “emergency restoration system” to the site while the reconstruction of the damaged towers is being arranged.

The company reported that the first of the two 330kV transmission lines tripped, followed by the second line as attempts were being made to restore power. Local vigilantes were immediately mobilised to patrol the area, which is prone to criminal activity.

The vandalism occurred at towers T133 and T136, with severe damage to the transmission cables. An aerial survey, in collaboration with security operatives, has been conducted to assess the extent of the damage.

Despite the setback, temporary measures have been put in place to supply bulk power to the affected regions via the 330kV Kaduna–Jos transmission line. TCN described the Shiroro–Kaduna lines as critical for transmitting up to 600MW of electricity to the North West, with the damage posing a significant challenge to power transmission in the area.

Mbah assured the public that the company is working to restore the towers and transmission lines to resume full bulk power supply.
